Who to talk to

If you think your child may have a hearing loss, it’s natural to be concerned. Try not to become overly worried at this stage. Take one step at a time, start by contacting a hearing healthcare professional, or speak to your family physician for a referral.

Below is a description of hearing healthcare professionals you can turn to for help with diagnosing and managing hearing loss. They can help you determine the best course of action for your child.

Audiologists are trained in measuring hearing loss, diagnosing disorders of the ear and communication counselling. An audiologist recommends and dispenses hearing aids and assistive listening devices.

Hearing Instrument Specialists are trained to perform some hearing tests, as well as to recommend and dispense hearing aids and assistive listening devices.

ENTs are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose and throat. An ENT will determine whether your child’s hearing loss is treatable (i.e. surgery or medication).
