Step 2: Who to contact

You can go directly to a hearing healthcare professional for an evaluation or get a referral from your family physician. The hearing healthcare professional will work with you to determine whether you have a hearing loss, and recommend a solution to improve your hearing.

There are various types of hearing healthcare professionals you can turn to for help:

AudiologistsAudiologists are trained in the measurement of hearing loss, disorders of the ears, communication counseling, and the recommendation and dispensing of hearing aids and assistive listening devices.
Hearing instrument specialists
Hearing Instrument Specialists are trained to perform some hearing tests and to recommend and dispense hearing aids and assistive listening devices.
Ear-nose-throat specialists
ENTs are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, nose and throat. An ENT will determine whether your hearing loss is treatable with surgery or medication.
